Durban trip 2015

Day 2 17/1/2015

This morning after breakfast, we headed off for our long drive to Durban. I must admit I have never seen so many trucks on a road before. I was quite scared at one stage. We stopped off at Graip Dam for photos, well it was mostly for my benift because I can’t remember stoppping off at this dam before.

Once we were on the N3 to Durban with all the trucks. We stopped off at the smallest church I have ever see. It was quite amazing! We only arrived in Durban and at Kieron’s parent’s house at 10:00 pm. Wow and that was only the beginning of the adventure!

Wilderness weekend 2015

2 – 4 January 2015

Kieron and I drove to the Wilderness for the weekend. My parents and sister were going there for the week. We managed to leave late morning when Kieron realised that he had nothing to do at work. So we headed out at 11:45 am to one of the best places in the world and it happened to be one of childhood holiday places. It was about a 5 hour drive to the Wilderness.

We arrived at the timeshare at 5:30 pm; we beat my parents about 2 mins! It was the best feeling in the world, hehe.

Once we had unpacked I showed Kieron around the place. First week walked down to the beach and went for a walk and watched the sunset. Then it was trampling! My dad started the braai very late so we ate late.

The next morning we got up late, had breakfast and then headed out to Storms River Mouth, which happens to be in the Eastern Cape. Kieron and I seem to be known to suddenly jump into the car and drive to different provinces. On the way we drove through Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, we picked up some rolls for our lunch. Luckily it was only about 2 hours drive, but we waited a long time to get into the park because of the queue. The Storms River Mouth is connected by a swing bridge and surrounded by green forests. This is so beautiful.

There were so many people though once we got into the park. We had our picnic just before walking to the swing bridge.

We arrived back in the Wilderness just in time for us to show and get dressed to go out for dinner.

On Sunday morning we were trampling before breakfast. After the later breakfast we decided to make the most of the last moments of the weekend we had and headed down to the pool. This happened to be green! So we had a plan B which happened to be the beach. Come on we were in the Wilderness! So on the way out we complained about the pool been being green. After our swim, we had a soft serve and then headed back to the timeshare for lunch. There wasn’t much time to do much else there.

We had a shower and then lunch was served. Afterwards we then packed up our stuff and headed off home at around 2:30 pm. Were are differently going to come back!We had supper at Houw Hoek Inn at around 6:30 pm. Then home. 2015-01-03 14.44.50

Elephant’s Eye Hike

Elephant's Eye

Elephant’s Eye

One cloudy, misty morning I decided to head up to Elephant’s Eye with my boyfriend. He is from KwaZulu-Natal and has never been up this side of Silvermine before. The walk to the cave is about 3 hours with a break in between to take photographs.

To my surprise there where a lot of people but it was a beautiful Sunday morning and it is a great way to get the kids out. I really didn’t think so many people would be out hiking on the mountain on a day like today since the weather wasn’t that great and it looked like rain.

To begin this walk we had to drive to Silvermine and turn right into the Gate 1 of the Silvermine which where the dam is located. This dam is a good stop for once you down to take a dip in the water. It was once used for sending water to the people in Kalk Bay back in the 19th Century. This has stopped now but they would only let people and dogs swim in the dam from the year 2000. One drives up to the parking lot where people park for picnicking at the dam. On the right there is a rocky path which goes straight up. This path goes on for a bit until it reaches a jeep track. You can go up this track but it is the longer why up to Elephant’s Eye or one can up a another rocky path. One carries on the jeep track for a while longer and then turns right onto a narrow rocky path. This path makes its way up with Fynbos on either side until one goes over a slight hill and then makes ones way next to a thicket of pine trees on your right which have half been cut down. By this time I realised where I was since the last time I hike this route I was just a kid myself. Then I could tell it shouldn’t be much longer until we reached the lookout point. Kieron and I kept having to pull a side and wait for people to come down or let them go ahead because they were either big parties or they were too slow or way too fast for our liking. Our aim was to enjoy ourselves instead of rushing.

Finally after a long stretch (In all I tried not to recite a saying an old editor friend once said to me as a kid). It was by someone called James Thurber “The way is long and getting longer. The road goes uphill all the way, and even further. I wish you luck. You’ll need it.” To be honest I am sure he made up his own lines at the end just to annoy us kids by saying “The road is long and getting longer, if you call for help there is none”

By then we finally got to the lookout point and then I realised how much worth the hard effort it was to hike up here and make the top.

After a pit stop of some water and some food we walked down and then took the path up to the beginning of the eye’s itself. The path zig zags to the top and it is definitely not over grown and it’s a nice wide path. The only problem I had was people taking short cuts down which usually leads to rock falls or accidents. Finally after a windy way up we finally made it to the cave. The path near the cave it a bit over grown and some hikers don’t really care where they walk. Once in the cave one can see it is quite big inside. I sat on a rock and just drank some water and looked out at amazing view over Tokia, Constantia and looking out to Muizenberg Beach. I thought that this walk was seriously worth waking up early for in the end.

When at last we made our way down to the dam, which was an awesome feeling and the happy feeling to take those boots off.

People ask why it is called Elephant’s Eye. The answer simply is that if one looks at the mountain at a certain angle then one can see that the trunk, then the eye (the cave) then by running your eye to the right and along the rest of the mountain one can see the back hip and the legs of the elephant, which is sticking out from the mountainside.

So hiking has always been part of my family that is probably why I know so much about it.  My parents are keen hikers and so where my grandparents. So the love for the outdoors is in my blood and nothing can change that.

Let’s see where the next hike or outdoor adventure will take me.

Day 20

Waking up early while ones on any kind of holiday is a pain and I personally don’t like it. Even if it is while I am overseas and sightseeing. This time I had to because we were going sightseeing tour of London. This tour also included some tourist shopping as well.

My sister can’t really remember London that well. So it was more of a recap but I found that I also picked up some new places along the way. Some interesting things I haven’t seen before.

That evening we went to see the Lion King show at the theatre. It was incredible!! I have never seen such as incredible show before. Well Phantom of the Opera was of course amazing. The Lion King was manly made out of puppets. Also been from South Africa made it even more special, since it is based in Africa:)

That show is definitely worth going to see. Even if you fly to London, just for the show.

We have arrived in London and walked to our hotel to check in. We are just now chilling.

Day 18

Today we went on a tour of Bristol, while Lara and Penny went off to a horse show. So Clive was the tour guide for the day. We went to the SS Britain Ship which has been docked in the Bristol harbour as a museum. This ship was the first ship to take passengers to Australia. It was very interesting about how it shaped history and how people lived on board for so many months at a time and some of the 3rd

class living conditions were not that great, but of course the 1st class passengers had the luxuries.

Day 17

We are going to see my friend Tiana today!! I can’t wait! I haven’t seen her in years. We picked her up at her flat (getting lost in the process) for the day. Then we headed off to Cheddar Gorge and that was beautiful. When we got there we first had coffee and cake, because it was cold and wet (summer for England). Then we walked up on top of the Gorge. It was so green and beautiful. Afterwards we drove down the country side and looked for a pub to have lunch in. This was an interesting experience with Britain’s narrow roads. Then afterwards we drove back to Bristol to drop off Tiana off at her place and then drove back to the other side of Bristol to where we are staying.

Day 16

We are now in England and we are going to be staying in Bristol for 4 nights. Last night we docked in at around 10:00 pm. My dad’s friend Clive came to pick us up and drove us back to their place which were we are staying.

This morning we woke up late and then had a late branch. Later that day my sister and I went clothes shopping and with a tour around the town. Then we went back for tea. Then after chilling for a bit we went for drinks at this pub in the town. It gets dark so late here it takes a while to get used to it. Then walked back to have supper.

Day 15

We are going to England and leaving France behind!!

Today we boarded a ferry to Poole (England). We took the train from Caen to Cherbourg to the harbour to board the ferry. While on the train to Cherbourg the weather changed from sunny partly cloudy to misty and raining. We had to wait a while at the harbour to be able to pass security and passport control to be able to board the ferry. To me it looked more like a ship. The ferry can carry passengers and cars as well. The ferry had places to sit and places to eat and look out across the channel. There were quite a lot of children on board.

I actually felt sea sick when crossing the channel and apparently we were having a smooth channel crossing even though it was cloudy and raining. I would hate to know when the channel is actually choppy! I had a good supper of stew. It tasted so good for a ferry’s food. The only food I actually had that day was salad for lunch. I felt too sick to read so luckily the ferry had free WIFI so I managed to get connected, so I could talk to people back home in South Africa.
